Immigrate to Portugal from Venezuela

Many Venezuelans have relocated to Portugal in recent years in an attempt to leave behind the turmoil from which their country has been suffering. After a rather high inflow, the numbers have stabilized in 2018, as indicated by the authorities. Many of the individuals coming to Venezuela have chosen to settle in Madeira or inland.

Moving to Portugal is an important step and Venezuelans who decide to do so will need to adjust to the cultural differences as well as the language. Those who decide to come to the country need to have a valid passport in order to enter the country and will require a special visa, according to their type of stay, for periods that exceed 90 days.

If you are interested in immigration to Portugal, you should know that our team of immigration lawyers is able to assist Venezuelans who wish to submit the applications for a visa with the Embassy in Caracas. Understanding the requirements is important before submitting the application and a correctly submitted file will reduce the time needed by the applicant, time that would otherwise be lost if the application would be rejected during the first submission.

Moving to Portugal

When they decide to move to Portugal, foreign nationals from non-EU countries, such as Venezuelans, will need to obtain the relevant permits that will allow them to enter the country and stay more than the regular tourist-permitted period (the aforementioned 90 days).

Gaining the right to reside in Portugal can be acquired in one of the following ways:

  1. by employment: when the applicant has applied for a job and had obtained the position; intra-company transfers are also an option;
  2. for a highly qualified job: in some cases, highly skilled workers can apply for a permit for their particular line of work;
  3. for investment: investors from Venezuela who can prove the value of their project can gain the right to reside in Portugal.
  4. for study: students, those who wish to continue their education as well as teachers or volunteers can apply for a permit.
  5. in family reunification cases: when the Venezuelan applicant has relatives or a spouse living in Portugal.

Each of these types of permits will include a set of general documents as well as particular ones, suited for the purpose of the stay. It is important to note that the purpose of the prolonged stay in the country should be adequately sustained, for example with an employment contract or the acceptance letter with a university or college.  We are also the disposition of those who want to apply for a golden visa in Portugal.

Our Portugal immigration agents can give you more details about each of these types of residence permits as well as the conditions under which family reunification is possible.

Like other South American nationals, some Venezuelans may qualify for citizenship by descent (Portuguese by origin). In case of citizenship by marriage, the status is acquired after three years of marriage to a citizen or three recognized years of cohabitation. The status is not revoked in case of divorce or separation after this period.
